About Immigration matters in Los Angeles

Immigration work in Los Angeles splits into paths that look similar from outside and behave very differently in practice: family petitions, employment-based visas, humanitarian relief such as asylum, naturalisation, and removal defense. The first useful thing a consultation does is establish which of those you are actually in, because the agency involved, the evidence required and the consequences of a mistake are not the same across them.

Timelines are largely outside any firm's control. Most of the waiting is queue time at USCIS, the National Visa Center or the immigration court, and no practitioner can move you up a line. What a firm does control is whether your filing is complete and consistent the first time. Requests for evidence, and the months they add, are frequently the result of an avoidable gap in the original package.

Removal defense runs on a separate and much less forgiving clock, in immigration court rather than at a service centre. If there is a hearing date, or a notice to appear, that date sets the priority for everything else. Missing it can result in an order entered in your absence.

Two practical filters when choosing: ask which of these paths the firm handles regularly rather than occasionally, and be direct about fees. Immigration work is usually flat-fee by stage. Government filing fees are separate from the firm's fee, and a firm should be able to tell you which is which before you retain them.

Common questions

General information about how these matters usually work in California and Los Angeles County. It is not legal advice about your situation.

Can a lawyer make my case go faster?
Generally no. Most of the elapsed time is queue time at a government agency, and that queue is not something a firm can shorten. What a firm can prevent is self-inflicted delay: an incomplete filing that draws a request for evidence, or a missed response window that restarts part of the process.
What is the difference between an immigration lawyer and a notario?
In California, only a licensed attorney or an accredited representative may give legal advice on an immigration matter. The Spanish word notario carries a much more senior meaning in many Latin American countries than notary public does in the United States, and that mismatch is the basis of a long-running category of consumer harm. Ask for a California Bar number and check it.
I have a court date. Is that different from a USCIS application?
Yes, and it is more urgent. A hearing date means you are in removal proceedings before an immigration judge, which is a different forum with different rules from an application filed with USCIS. Bring every notice you have received to the first consultation.
Does a criminal record affect an immigration case?
It can, sometimes severely and sometimes in ways that are not obvious from the outcome in criminal court. A plea that looked minor at the time can carry immigration consequences years later. If both matters are live, they need to be looked at together rather than in sequence.
